I’ve been fortunate to be part of building two successful 7-figure small businesses: first, as a partner in a niche engineering firm catering to real rocket scientists; and, second, as owner and founder of a B2B national provider of custom commercial signage and graphics. We cultured strong and trusted client relationships, and many of our clients became our friends. We did a lot of good, and I’m proud to have this background as part of my foundation for helping other business owners succeed!
But, I’ve also experienced a lot of the “pain” that is common to small business owners. I’ve been in the trenches. I’ve spent too much time working IN the business instead of ON the business. I’ve made plenty of mistakes internally (strategy, interactions with personnel, etc.) and externally (with vendors, subcontractors and clients). I’ve experienced stress to the point of feeling my chest hurt. I’ve had to wonder whether we’d have enough cash to cover payroll. And in my efforts to provide for my family with these entrepreneurial pursuits, I ended up compromising my time and relationships with them.
